Zambia, through the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ), is set to defend its application to join the International Engineering Alliance and secure signatory status to the Washington Accord.
This landmark international agreement establishes global benchmarks for engineering education and professional practice among member states, ensuring that Zambia’s engineering qualifications are recognized and respected worldwide.
The defense is scheduled to take place at the International Engineering Alliance Annual General Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, from 8 to 12 June 2026. It will be presented before representatives of 45 member states from across the globe.
EIZ is actively pursuing full signatory status in three international Educational Accords that encompass the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines. These include the Washington Accord for professional engineers, the Sydney Accord for engineering technologists, and the Dublin Accord for engineering technicians and craftspersons.
Beginning with Zambia’s accession to the Washington Accord, the nation’s defense of its engineering education standards will highlight the comprehensive reforms undertaken to align with internationally recognized benchmarks. Central to these reforms has been the integration of defined graduate attributes into the engineering curriculum; attributes that are essential for recognition as a member state under the Accord.
Zambia is expected to further demonstrate that the universities participating in the pilot program, along with their respective courses, meet the required academic and professional standards. In particular, the training value chain at the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University, and Mulungushi University will be shown to comply with the provisions of the International Engineering Alliance under the Washington Accord.
Zambia’s integration into the Washington Accord marks a pivotal step for national development, positioning the country as a trusted hub for engineering excellence. This global recognition enhances investor confidence and opens the door to increased foreign direct investment, particularly in manufacturing, mining, and other engineering-driven industries.
Alignment with the Accord provides assurance that Zambia’s engineering infrastructure is managed by world-class professionals resulting in enhanced economic competitiveness, putting the country on the global map.
This status once acquired, will position Zambia as a globally recognized engineering hub, empowering the nation to export services and play a stronger role in international trade and infrastructure projects.
Zambia is set to boost foreign exchange earnings by expanding education exports across Africa, driven by its signatory status under the Washington Accord.
The Accord mandates a rigorous, outcomes-based accreditation system, raising the standard of engineering education in Zambia and ensuring graduates are prepared to tackle globally defined complex engineering problems.
For engineers, technologists, technicians, and craft professionals, this alignment breaks down barriers to career growth. Membership will unlock international mobility: graduates of Accord-accredited programmes will enjoy streamlined pathways to professional registration and licensure in other signatory countries without the need for extensive re-examination.
Following the defense and successful admission to the Washington Accord, EIZ will implement accreditation reforms across all engineering programmess to align the graduate attributes and standards. This milestone will ensure universities meet globally recognized benchmarks. Building on this achievement, EIZ will pursue full signatory status which will include the Sydney and Dublin Accords.
The International Engineering Alliance is a global non-profit organisation, which comprises 45 member countries across seven international agreements. These international agreements govern the recognition of engineering educational qualifications and professional competence. This accreditation will raise Zambia’s profile on the global map as a trusted source of engineering works for the international labour market and procuring entities as well as enhance the levels of competence for engineering professionals.
For the last four years, EIZ has been mentored by with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to obtain full signatory to the International Engineering Alliance.
