Excitement is flying across local golf courses as different players and clubs prepare to participate in the Zambian Ladies Open, a major competition that is a conduit for ranking amateur golfers. The World Amateur Golf Ranking will be keeping a close eye as the tournament unfolds from 26 to 28 June; so much is at stake.
Revealing the details to the Zambian Business Times, Zambia Ladies Golf (ZLG) Secretary General Karen Nguluwe said seven teams have confirmed participation, including South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, and Botswana.
Zambia is vying to outcompete Tanzanian golfer Carol Shabalala and claim a first honor in a major tournament for the first time in years.
“The defending champion may come to defend it again, and we have Tanzania on the list of countries that are competing.” She expressed confidence that Team Zambia will go all the way to earn better points on the World Amateur Ranking.
She described the country’s recent performances as stable but urged for a drastic improvement to conquer Africa as a whole.
“We haven’t won honors in a while; last year we went for the East and Central Africa Challenge Cup in Kenya, and we are hoping to do better this year as it takes place in Nigeria. It is biannual; we are hoping to feature a team there.” Some of the key players that are expected to participate are Annie Nsama, who is highly regarded and seeded first, and Kaira Mulenga, a superb professional.
