Zambia’s housing deficit continues to push home ownership beyond the reach of many citizens, alternative property financing models such as rentto-own housing agreements are increasingly attracting attention. However, real estate experts say the model has historically struggled to work effectively in Zambia despite existing in legal and property frameworks for years. Rent-to-own arrangements, commonly used in more developed property markets, allow tenants to occupy a property as renters while paying an agreed premium over a specified period, with part of those payments eventually contributing toward purchasing the home.
