Truck drivers using the Chililabombwe to Kasumbalesa border route are now paying nightly parking fees of up to $40 at various truck parks set up along the corridor, according to information shared with the Zambian Business Times (ZBT). The Southern Africa Cross-Border Traders Association General Secretary, Jacob Makambwe, told ZBT that the ongoing road upgrades leading to the Kasumbalesa border post have created heavy congestion, contributing to the surge in parking fees.
“The continuous congestion at Kasumbalesa Border during the road upgrade, combined with the high cost of truck parks along the route, is taking a toll on truck drivers. Many facility owners are capitalizing on the situation,” Makambwe said.
He highlighted that most truck parks set up along the upgraded road are charging up to $40 per night, yet the facilities often lack adequate amenities and proper sanitation. “Many truck drivers avoid these truck parks, not just because of the high fees, but also due to poor conditions and unsatisfactory sanitation,” he added.
Makambwe emphasized the urgent need to improve sanitation and security in the truck parks between Chililabombwe and Kasumbalesa to attract more users. “If councils are operating these parks, they must invest in amenities that draw truck drivers to use the facilities. Improved security and sanitation are essential for creating a conducive environment and attracting business along this critical transport corridor,” Makambwe said.
As congestion and parking costs remain high, stakeholders are calling for urgent reforms to ensure that truck drivers have access to affordable, safe, and hygienic parking options along the Chililabombwe-Kasumbalesa route.
