Students should treat artificial intelligence (AI) as a valuable learning partner rather than a shortcut for academic work, according to ICT expert Ali Kingston Mwila.
In an exclusive interview with the Zambian Business Times (ZBT), Mwila acknowledged concerns that AI tools may enable cheating in educational settings. However, he emphasized that responsible use of AI can enhance research, learning, and critical thinking among students.
He encouraged learners to develop skills such as prompt engineering—the ability to communicate effectively with AI systems and critically assess the information provided. “AI is a partner, it is a tool that we need to use,” he said.
Mwila advised students to verify information generated by AI platforms instead of accepting every response as accurate. “Interacting with AI requires users to have subject knowledge, so they can identify incorrect information,” he explained. “Often, AI will disclose its sources, allowing users to cross-check and deepen their understanding.”
He compared the current impact of AI to the introduction of tools like Microsoft Excel, which initially sparked fears about job losses for accountants. Instead, technology increased efficiency, allowing professionals to focus on more complex tasks. “AI is not replacing people; it is changing the way things are done and making people more efficient,” Mwila said.
He concluded by urging schools and institutions to teach learners how to use AI responsibly, while fostering human creativity, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
