Interest in interior design services is growing in Zambia as more businesses and homeowners seek to create functional and aesthetically appealing spaces, according to Mutale Katongo, founder and owner of Eminent Interior Limited.
Speaking in an interview with Zambian Business Times-ZBT, Katongo said the industry has seen increasing demand from both commercial and residential clients. “We are seeing more people becoming intentional about the spaces they live and work in,” she said.
Katongo noted that businesses such as restaurants, salons and beauty establishments are increasingly investing in interior design to enhance customer experience and improve the overall appeal of their premises.
She added that residential demand has also grown since 2020, although many homeowners continue to make gradual improvements to their homes rather than engage designers for fullscale projects. “People are investing in quality furniture, mirrors and other elements that improve their spaces. We are also seeing more inquiries and consultations, which shows growing interest in interior design services,” she said.
Katongo stated that, demand is particularly noticeable among homeowners developing highend properties, where clients often involve architects and design professionals from the early stages of construction. Despite the growing interest, Katongo said the industry faces challenges related to training and skills development. She exposed that Zambia has limited institutions offering specialized interior design programmes, leading many aspiring designers to rely on self-learning and online courses to build their skills.
“Formal training helps improve competency and professionalism, but there are currently limited opportunities for people who want to pursue interior design as a career,” she said.
Katongo also pointed to the need for more skilled artisans capable of executing complex design concepts and delivering high-quality finishes. She explained that while designers may develop strong concepts, the final outcome often depends on the availability of craftsmen with the necessary expertise.
Katongo further encouraged clients to focus on personalised design solutions rather than simply replicating trends seen on social media. “Every client is different, and every space should reflect the needs of the people who use it. Good design is about creating spaces that suit a person’s lifestyle and preferences,” she said.
