The recently $4 million deal signed between Chingola Resources (formerly Senseli Mine) and the small-scale miners known as Jerabos on the Copperbelt has been described as a “mistake” and a mere “temporal measure” that fails to offer a lasting solution.
Chingola Resources, formerly known as Senseli Mine, has entered into a $4 million agreement with the small-scale miners popularly known as the Jerabos of Chingola on the Copperbelt. This deal is intended to halt the Jerabos’ mining operations at the dumpsite, but some community leaders are raising concerns about its long-term effectiveness.
Speaking in an interview with the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, Presiding Bishop Allison Bwalya of Life Giving Word Christian Ministries expressed skepticism about the deal, questioning its sustainability.
Bishop Bwalya expressed concern over the safety and social consequences of giving huge sums of money to individuals who are often not educated, likening it to giving “a gun to an unskilled man.” The Bishop stated that giving the miners a lump sum of money “has not solved any problem” and is akin to “servicing a loan by borrowing somewhere else.” He believes the money will quickly run out, after which the Jerabos will inevitably ret.………Read the details in the weekly ZBT edition.
